What is a fascinator? How do you make one?

Learn the history of fascinators from Maddie. She will demonstrate basic millinery techniques that are used to make fascinators, how to use millinery wire to make a wire base, and the use of various embellishments. You will have the opportunity to make one for yourself and friend!

Priority registration for Sacramento ASG members is September 15, 2023 – October 31, 2023. On November 1, 2023, registration will be open to everyone. A waiting list will be established when the event is full. Due to contract obligations with Zephyr Point Conference Center, registration rates increase on February 1, 2024. A $300 down payment secures your registration. Final payments are due by February 1, 2024.

Are you intimidated by the embroidery functions of your sewing machine? Come learn about the basics—stabilizers, fabric, needles, thread, etc. You will make two in the hoop projects by the end of class!

You will need a minimum 5” x 7” (180x130 mm) hoop and your machine must have USB capability. Please let Kathy know what brand and model machine you have before 2/22.

The supplies needed are found in the directions for the designs. You will need to do a little pre-class preparation for the zipper pouch (cutting, starching and ironing as directed). More information on prep work will be provided to you in February.

Kathy will provide a kit with stabilizer for both projects, cork for the needle case, and information guide on stabilizers to take home. These will be included in a $4 kit, payable to Kathy on the day of class. Correct change will be greatly appreciated.

Acquire your Sew Together Bag pattern by SewDemented now as you will need the pattern piece supplied by the pattern to complete the bag. Check your local quilt shop or look online.

The workshop does have approximately 2 hours of pre-workshop homework.

Sewists with intermediate sewing skills are encouraged to register. However, confident beginners are welcome provided they do not expect a perfect outcome.

There will be an additional $2 zipper fee payable to Debbie Jean Hopkins at the beginning of the workshop.

3-day Dart Manipulation class with Anne Dieu

Anne Dieu, ASG member and faculty member at ARC’s Fashion Program is offering a 3-part class that will focus on pattern work, pattern making tools, and bodice dart manipulation. Our pattern work skills will improve, and we will be able to use those curves like a professional!

In the class sessions, we will learn about and practice bodice dart manipulation to create other styles from the basic darted bodice. During the final session, we will use one of our own patterns to create other styles with princess darts, french darts, parallel darts, neckline darts, etc.

MAKE YOUR SLOPER WORK FOR YOU

FEATURING LYNDA MAYNARD

ASG Sacramento is excited to invite you to a workshop featuring Lynda Maynard. In this workshop attendees will convert a sloper or master bodice pattern into a jacket pattern, make a test garment of the jacket, and use the sloper in conjunction with a commercial pattern of their choosing. Attendees can use the skills learned in this workshop for future bodice based projects.

We have space for 12 students for a hands-on class in pattern work.

Date: Saturday and Sunday, March 18 and 19, from 9am-5pm

Location: Steve Cook’s Fireside Lanes, 7901 Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights

****For this workshop you MUST have:

1. A well fitting bodice sloper/master pattern in muslin

2. Three paper copies of the sloper/master pattern without seam allowances

3. The sloper/master pattern traced onto the specified plastic sheeting—details provided to registrants

To assist registrants with workshop preparation, three fitting sessions will be offered:

1. Sunday, January 22, 3pm after the Fitting Divas NG meeting at Fireside Lanes

2. Monday, January 23, 1-4pm at 2757 Curtis Way, Sacramento (Brenda Fotos)

3. Saturday, February 4, 1-4pm at 2757 Curtis Way, Sacramento (Brenda Fotos)

The organizers will contact registrants about attending the above sessions, and about the necessary supplies. In the sessions, we will help tweak slopers/master patterns and demonstrate tracing the pattern onto the plastic.

Measure, cut, sew. That is all it takes to make an elegant sleeveless blouse with a bateau neckline. Ingeniously, it is cut and sewn on the straight-of-grain, but worn on the true bias. The blouse is made to the students' measurements . Students may adjust the blouse to achieve a high-draped cowl neckline. Designer and expert on the bias cut, Julianne, has done the engineering so you don't have to! A zero-waste design, it is appropriate for your most precious fabrics!

Yvonne loves working with various kinds of media; however, her favorites are fabrics and beads. She is a designer, instructor and jewelry and fiber artist. She learned to sew at an early age watching her mother and grandmother sew and grabbing their scraps from under the table. She is a self-taught jewelry designer who loves to play with metalwork and found objects. She loves to turn fabric stash into beads and wearable art and jewelry using found objects, patina metals, charms, buttons, and stuff.

Jewels and Fiber offers trendy styles of wearable art and jewelry made from a selection of mixed media beads, findings, fibers and yarns, paper and polymer clay crafted embellishments. What’s happening in the Sacramento Chapter?

We are having a Holiday/General Meeting this Thursday, November 18^th at 6:30 PM. There will be presentations from some of our Neighborhood and Special Interest Groups, information about our involvement with Wellspring Women’s Center and information about upcoming Chapter events. Artful Upcycling with Leslee Montgomery

October 30, 2021 for the 5th Saturday Sew Along (FSSA). Guest speaker starts at 10:00. Sewing lasts until 4:00 pm or until people want leave.

Our guest speaker will be Leslee Montgomery from the Contra Costa Chapter. A retired engineering draftsman, Leslee learned to sew mostly because she did not have an ‘off the rack’ body. (Does anyone?) She wanted well fitting clothes, but with her artistic aesthetic. In retirement, she was the assistant costumer for a local theater in Walnut Creek.

During this time, she discovered a love of men’s shirts for their fabric and styling. After solving the fit issue to a woman’s body, she started getting creative adorning the shirts. Because they are thrift shirts they are not precious and she could try out multiple ideas. She added fabrics, embroidery, and finally paint to the mix.

If you want to try restyling a shirt of your own as your FSSA project, here are your starting point requirements:

• Pick a shirt with long sleeves and a collar.
• Size a shirt by choosing one with a collar that fits, or almost fits. It doesn’t matter if you never button the collar.
• Leslee prefers to work with shirting material that is on the heavier side. Not the lightweight wrinkle resistant fabrics. This is more a personal preference and not a requirement.
• Gather a few coordinating fabrics.

Leslee will guide you through her process and open you to new artistic possibilities.
Her presentation will be recorded and available for one week.

Learn about “Healthy Happy Sewing” from Rose Parr, author of “Sew Healthy & Happy, Smart Ergonomics, Stretches & More for Makers”.

We will learn all about the ergonomics of sewing and creating a sewing room that supports our bodies as well as our craft.

We will also explore some tricks and tools used by our various members. Throughout the day we will take “mini tours” of sewing rooms as members share their favorite helpful ideas.

Schedule:

Sign in via zoom from 9:30 - 10:00 am on July 31st. Rose Parr will give her presentation from 10 – 11. Then we will continue to sew with “Mini Tour” presentations every hour or half hour depending on the number of members who sign up to share. Think about signing up to share a favorite tip, tool, or aspect of your sewing room with other sewists – we will learn so much from each other. Rose has made it her mission to work at staying pain free while continuing to sew for as long as possible. She has combined her studies in home economics with her certifications in ergonomics, fitness, wellness, and nutrition to teach others how to sew smart. Rose lives in Guelph, Ontario, Cana-da with her husband, David.

Rose shares her expertise on how to sew smarter, healthier, and happier. Sewing shouldn’t be a pain in the neck! This presentation will make sure you have the right posture, techniques, and stretches when putting in those long hours on your next project.

She is a professional longarm quilter and a regular contributor to Canadian Quilter Magazine. Her book " Sew Healthy & Happy, Smart Ergonomics, Stretches & More for Makers" is now available from Amazon.

After Rae's presentation, we will meet this year's scholarship winners and then break for lunch. After lunch we will discuss the Tabula Rasa Jacket Workshop.

Calling all Mask Makers! - Zoom Sit & Sew on March 6, 2021

The Native American people are in dire need of masks. The Sewing for Native Nations organization has requested our help to meet their need of 400,000 masks. We will have a virtual Sit N Sew on Saturday March 6th from 10am – 2pm. The masks can be any style and any size from child’s small to adult XL. The masks should have 3 layers of cotton (or two cotton and an inner layer of non-woven poly-propylene {NWPP} similar to polymesh stabilizer). The list of prints not to be used is below.

These are ONLY GUIDELINES, as many tribes have different associations with what would be considered taboo in the way of fabric.

This is NOT by any means a guide to reject fabric. On the contrary. We get many requests, such as migrant, schools, special-needs, homeless communities, even first responders etc. and any fabrics that are questionable may be used for non-native requests. These are our guidelines designed to assist you on some of the questions you have had about Native Culture and what patterns you may want to avoid. The following is our own list of things to avoid for Native Tribes (generalization):

Teepees, Feathers, Dream catchers, Fox, Bones, Wolves, Skulls, Crosses, Menorahs, etcetera- or any religious symbol: Owls, Solid Black, Coyote, Headdresses, Trickster, Arrows, Kokapelli

It is important to remember that there are very diverse cultures across America. ¨ While skulls are generally not allowed, some Communities celebrate the Day of the Dead with skulls, and fabric with skulls, bones, sugar skulls, etc. ¨ While Turtles are reptiles, some Nations consider Turtle Island sacred, and turtles might be worn in those communities. That being said, it is important for you to remember that this is a GENERALIZED LIST that we have created on our page to give you a guideline. We can use many, many fabrics around the native communities that still have high numbers of native requests around them. If you have a question about the fabric choice you are making, please reach out to us! We do not like to turn away masks when the need is so great! You can reach out to our sewing advisors and they can guide you, or you can reach out to us at our email at SewingAdvisor@SewingForNativeNations.org.

Wellspring Women's Center -- "The Hood" Quilt

An item we are overjoyed to bring you is a handmade quilt made especially for Taste of Hope by members of the American Sewing Guild who coordinate and teach the sewing program at Wellspring.

Socially-distanced brainstorming and design took place in a local park in January with Gail Reinke spearheading the project. Each person created a “neighborhood block” of houses using exquisite and colorful donated fabrics from Wellspring and their own stashes. No two houses are alike, and they really show the creative personality of each maker.

The evening virtual program will highlight the beautiful and creative ways in which our community has come through for us when it mattered most. Please join us for an inside look at the work we’ve accomplished, learn about our plans for the future, and help us celebrate Wellspring Women’s Center.

PJ Giveaway at Wellspring

Wellspring received a huge donation of flannel fabric. The Community Service group decided to make PJs and give them away. Some members also used their own fabric to make PJs. Most of the fabric was for kids, thus kids got the bulk of the giveaway.
